"perfect weapon" quote
Marion Fulk, staff scientist, Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory, retired, brings five decades of technical knowledge
to Tri-Valley CAREs as one of the group's volunteer technical advisors.
A chemical physicist, Marion retired from LLNL in 1984 after 18 years
there as a staff scientist specializing in chemical physics and material
properties. At LLNL, Marion's research included but was not limited
to the study of radioactive "rainout" from nuclear weapons test explosions.
Marion's work at LLNL included numerous research projects involving
plutonium and tritium, two radionuclides of special concern to Tri-Valley
CAREs and the community (as these contaminants have shown up in local
parks, rain, groundwater and agricultural products). From 1952 to 1967,
Marion was employed by the National Bureau of Standards, Atomic Energy
Commission Cryogenic Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, where he worked
on low temperature physics and the properties of materials, including
radioactive materials. His background also includes University research
in the fields of nuclear physics, chemistry and materials science, including
work on neutron scattering cross-sections. Marion has lived in Livermore
since 1966, and has been an advisor to Tri-Valley CAREs since 1988.

"Facts, Myths and
Propaganda In the Debate Over Depleted Uranium Weapons"
by Dan Fahey
Fahey's infamous self-published "balanced" report
And the Pentagon often overstates its case - in
terms of DU effectiveness on the battlefield, or declaring the absence
of health problems, according to Dan Fahey, an American veterans advocate
who has monitored the shrill arguments from both sides since the mid-1990s.
"DU munitions are neither the benign wonder weapons
promoted by Pentagon propagandists nor the instruments of genocide decried
by hyperbolic anti-DU activists," Mr. Fahey writes in a March report,
called "Science or Science Fiction: Facts, Myth and Propaganda in the
Debate Over DU Weapons." (CSM,
May 15, 2003)
The Emergence and
Decline of the Debate Over Depleted Uranium Munitions 1991-2004,
by Dan Fahey, 20 June 2004
This outspoken piece rattled the feathers of anti-DU campaigners who see
it as very damaging to their respectable cause. Many have disassociated
with him.
Some activists who earlier had been credible also
started to advance claims based more on assertion than proof. These
activists, including some with science backgrounds, started to exploit
the scientific uncertainties and decry DU as a “crime against God and
humanity.” Cults of personality formed around activists who spread a
dire gospel based on a blend of fact and fiction as they marched forward,
every forward, in a messianic haze.

Summary
of Depleted Uranium Test Results For Iraq War Veterans
paper by Dan Fahey 17 March 2006
SUMMARY The use of armor-piercing ammunition
made from depleted uranium (DU) during the war in Iraq has raised concerns
about DU exposures among military personnel and civilians. Since 2003,
the US Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA) have tested more than 2,100 Iraq war veterans for DU exposure and
the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has tested approximately 350 veterans.
There have reportedly been few positive test results, but these results
obscure problems with selection processes and testing methods. In this
paper I summarize publicly available information about the use of DU
munitions in Iraq, analyze differences between DoD/VA and MoD testing
processes, review the results of government testing efforts, and discuss
the significance of the testing processes and results.
Acritical
response to this paper by James Salsman
QUOTE: "...I hope you will please join me in advocating that uranium
contamination be measured by chromosome abberation analysis instead
of urine isotope analysis."

Peterson is an author, a photographer for Getty Images and a regular
contributer to the Christian Science Monitor who has taken a strong interest
in depleted uranium. He is one of the few people
who has actually taken a geiger counter to Iraq and proven first-hand
that DU bullets are there and radiating at levels way beyond normal background.
